World AIDS Day 2008

Every year on 1 December, World AIDS Day encourages everyone to stop and think about people affected by HIV and AIDS.

GSK’s commitment to HIV and AIDS
The following video, The Journey, charts over 25 years of HIV/AIDS and GSK’s commitment to fighting it.

  • We are helping to make treatment a reality
  • We have been on the forefront of HIV research for over 25 years and developed the first anti-retroviral medication to treat HIV infection
  • Our Positive Action programme has been supporting communities affected by HIV & AIDS for over 15 years
  • We have the largest portfolio of HIV medicines
  • We have supplied millions of anti-retroviral tablets at no profit to those who need help most
  • We are developing easy-to-dose anti-retrovirals for children in hardest hit communities
  • We are pioneering the development of a vaccine through multiple projects both in-house and with external partners
  • Our efforts will help to defeat AIDS

Every year, on World AIDS Day, people are urged to wear a red ribbon as a sign of solidarity with the millions of people affected by HIV and AIDS throughout the world.

Most importantly it is a signal aimed at challenging prejudice, raising awareness of HIV/AIDS and reminding us that this disease has not gone away.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of annual observance of World AIDS Day. It is also a time for individuals around the globe to reflect on a disease that claims the lives of 8,000 people every day and continues to threaten millions more.

It is also an opportunity for each of us to renew our commitment to doing what we can to help stop the spread of HIV.

The theme of this year’s World AIDS Day is: Lead. Empower. Deliver.

Individuals, organisations and governments can all respond to this theme.
